Women Connecting Women in Business
In June, Nancy Victor, NAWBO-SA president elect, was invited by another NAWBO member, TJ Haygood, owner of Confidential Search Solutions, to attend a meeting at the White House on job creation. Nancy went to the meeting the day after she was notified that she was the new NAWBO-SA president elect. She went with a purpose—to talk about the Affordable Care Act (ACA—Healthcare Reform) because her business, HelpMe!! Tech Team, caters to the medical industry as a technology service provider . Nancy studied and tapped into numerous resources to learn all she could about the ACA. While at the White House, she waited and waited for the topic to come up. They were getting down to the last hour of the meeting, and it still had not been mentioned. Nancy said she had to raise her hand (even interrupted San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro) to bring up the topic. She stated that she felt she would not be doing her part if she did not bring up the subject. The White House representatives were not prepared to speak on the topic, but promised to send someone to San Antonio to address the subject.
Nancy came back to San Antonio and immediately started following up with the White House to hold them to their promise. It took Nancy almost two months of being very persistent to finally get a commitment from the White House that included a specific person, date, and time they would be in San Antonio.
On Thursday, August 9, NAWBO-SA hosted an event that featured White House Representative, Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary, Ned Holland, to discuss the current impacts of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on business. In addition to hearing from Mr. Holland, a panel of experts was moderated by a Health Care Lawyer from Jackson Walker, Jeffrey Drummond. Questions were drawn up by the panelists and gathered from registered guests. The questions targeted issues such as employee benefits, tax implications, and healthcare coverage. The panelists included the following:
