Welcome to NAWBO-SA... Started in 1998 as a collection of innovators; NAWBO-SA is the premier organization for women business owners in San Antonio. Our burning ideas led to starting this chapter and develop its programs, some of which are recognized on a national scale. We invite you to be part of the conversation...

Highlights

Women Connecting Women in Business

In June, Nancy Victor, NAWBO-SA president elect, was invited by another NAWBO member, TJ Haygood, owner of Confidential Search Solutions, to attend a meeting at the White House on job creation. Nancy went to the meeting the day after she was notified that she was the new NAWBO-SA president elect. She went with a purpose—to talk about the Affordable Care Act   (ACA—Healthcare Reform) because her business, HelpMe!! Tech Team, caters to the medical industry as a technology service provider . Nancy studied and tapped into numerous resources to learn all she could about the ACA. While at the White House, she waited and waited for the topic to come up. They were getting down to the last hour of the meeting, and it still had not been mentioned. Nancy said she had to raise her hand (even interrupted San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro) to bring up the topic. She stated that she felt she would not be doing her part if she did not bring up the subject. The White House representatives were not prepared to speak on the topic, but promised to send someone to San Antonio to address the subject.

Nancy came back to San Antonio and immediately started following up with the White House to hold them to their promise. It took Nancy almost two months of being very persistent to finally get a commitment from the White House that included a specific person, date, and time they would be in San Antonio.

On Thursday, August 9, NAWBO-SA hosted an event that featured White House Representative, Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary, Ned Holland, to discuss the current impacts of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on business. In addition to hearing from Mr. Holland, a panel of experts was moderated by a Health Care Lawyer from Jackson Walker, Jeffrey Drummond. Questions were drawn up by the panelists and gathered from registered guests. The questions targeted issues such as employee benefits, tax implications, and healthcare coverage. The panelists included the following:
  • Lynn Weirich, President, Business Financial Group
  • Dianna Burns, MD, Physician, South Texas Center for Pediatric Care
  • Kim Ford, Partner, Hill & Ford P.C.
  • Judith Kenton, Tax Manager, ATKG L.L.P. CPAs
NAWBO-San Antonio is proud to have brought this nonpartisan event to the business leaders and owners throughout San Antonio. As the host for this event, we invited numerous other organizations to participate. The educational event highlighted NAWBO’s mission to propel women entrepreneurs into economic, social, and political spheres of power locally and worldwide. NAWBO has always played an active role in transforming public policy and influencing opinion makers.

We are very thankful that our president elect, Nancy Victor, owner of HelpMe!! Tech Team, spoke up at the White House meeting and then followed up to make this event happen. Many thanks to the program team (Kathy Swanson, owner, Intergrated Marketing Werx; Elise Cox, owner, Adgraphics; Nancy Victor, owner, HelpMe!!TechTeam; and Anne-Marie Weldon, NAWBO-SA chapter administrator) and to our moderator (Jeff Drummond, partner with Jackson Walker) and the Panel of Experts (Lynn Wierich, Dr. Burns, Kim Ford, and Judith Kenton) who acted quickly to pull everything together for this event within a very short time frame. Each person took time from their schedules and dedicated it to this program. For those whom I may have not mentioned, please know we appreciate your dedication and time to this project.

Your feedback on this and all programs is greatly appreciated. It is through your comments that we are able to continuously make progress and improve our programs. Address feedback and comments to   info@nawbosa.org.
