Ready or not, Marketing 2.0 is here! What is Marketing 2.0 you ask? It is about adapting how you interact with consumers to build meaningful relationships rather than just talking at them. An effective strategy is a combination of traditional and new marketing approaches based on what works best for your audience. Besides direct mail, print collateral, radio/TV, billboards, and other traditional methods it will include social networking, blogs, RSS, video sharing, podcasting, mobile apps, etc.
While traditional marketing is still relevant for most businesses, it is based on “pushing” your message in an attempt to entice them to contact you. The opposite or “pulling” is about engaging, finding out what your audience wants, and providing it. Ultimately, it’s about going back to basics and getting to know who your customers are and what they need. With the emergence of social media over the last few years, we’ve seen a shift in how people do business.
Social media gives you the opportunity to capitalize on the most powerful form of advertising – word of mouth marketing – by creating brand advocates. These are the people who will talk positively about you and convince others you are the best choice.
Do you still need business cards, brochures, and Web site? Absolutely. People still want something to “take with them” and refer to later. Your Web site is your hub for all your marketing efforts and should include compelling content to convert visitors into customers.
Marketing 2.0 is about not just talking but actually listening. If you see or hear that customers are having issues they want addressed, be proactive and find out what you can do to rectify the problems. You have the opportunity to turn around the situation and make loyal fans out of disgruntled ones and gain new friends along the way. Focus on providing an open dialogue so people get to know who you are, what you do, and why you do it. Share your expertise and resources to build credibility and trust. People like doing business with people they know (or think they know). When they are ready to buy, you will be first in their minds. It has become a customer-driven world and the time has come to formulate your own Marketing 2.0 strategy.
